Back to School Computer Maintenance

We typically remember to do our “Spring Cleaning”, but here’s a Fall computer clean-up recipe that is just as important to do:
- Backup your important files; and those that you may not think that are that important. Use a backup device such as a DVD burner or External Hard Drive. Store the DVDs or External HDD in a media firesafe, or at another offsite, secure location.
- Go through your list of installed programs and applications and remove any that you don’t need or use anymore – while removing/uninstalling them keep any shared libraries that other applications may use.
- Delete unnecessary files. This includes your temporary files that haven’t been used in the last several days.
- De-fragment your hard drive(s). On Windows XP go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter

- Shutdown everything, unplug from the wall outlets, and physically clean out the cobwebs – inside your workstation with canned air and don’t forget your keyboard and mouse. This physical cleaning is important and often overlooked. The end of summer is a good time to do this invasive cleaning. Your glass windows will not be open much longer (or at all) and less (“fresh”) air will be blown into the computer with the dirt, pollen, and dust from outside.
